"Massage Therapy"

What is Massage Therapy?

Massage Therapy is a hands on manipulation of soft tissues. Massage dates back as far as five thousand years ago, and has evolved over recent years to become an intricate part of our health care system. Massage therapy is a holistic approach in improving one's health.

Benefits of Massage

Massage increases blood flow to the tissues, relaxes muscles, reduces inflammation, therefore promotes healing. When muscles are stressed they block oxygen and nutrients leading to inflammation. This builds up toxins in the muscle tissue which causes pain, discomfort and weakens the involved muscles. Massage therapy reduces inflammation through direct compression delivering oxygen and other vital nutrients to the cells; as well as, enhancing the removal of toxins in the body. Massage helps to prevent and relieve muscle cramps, spasms, and break up adhesions (which are local area scar tissue). Another benefit of massage is relieving fatigue, tension, anxiety and improving relaxation within the body.

Types of Massage

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage focuses on decreasing chronic muscle tension by using slow strokes and deep pressure. This helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue. Deep tissue massage is both corrective and therapeutic for the muscles.

Prenatal Massage

This type of massage occurs during pregnancy. Massage during pregnancy is beneficial for relaxation, soothing stress, and relieving sore back and leg muscles. Prenatal massage also instills a feeling of well being to the mother which transcends to the unborn child. The therapist uses gentle and light strokes during the massage. This massage is designed to provide comfort for the pregnant female. Always discuss your pregnancy with the massage therapist prior to your first massage.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger points are highly irritable points within muscles that can refer pain to other areas of the body. The therapist locates these points and deactivates them in order to decrease pain and improve muscle function. Tis is also accompanied by stretching and ischemic compression, that removes toxins and increases oxygen to the affected area.

Myofascial Release

This is a form of stretching of the skin and tissue in order to restore and enhance normal mobility in muscle restrictions. This is a forceful technique; however, it is seldom painful. This technique is often used for patients with fibromyalgia, plantar fasciitis, whiplash injuries, and sprain/strains to name just a few.

Neuromuscular Massage

This technique aims to relax muscles by increasing circulation within the body. This helps to normalize neuromuscular integrity and balance. Neuromuscular massage focuses on the relationship between the nervous system and how it relates to the muscular system.

Sports Massage

This type of massage enables athletes to attain their highest potential by increasing the body's natural restorative properties when participating in rigorous physical activities. Sports massage helps to alleviate stress due to intense muscle training and overexertion. This massage helps to decrease muscle fatigue and increase flexibility which may prevent future injuries.

Hot Stone

This type of massage uses heat and smooth stones to create a relaxing, gentle and effective full body therapy. The application of warm heated stones help to soften the muscles, so the therapist is able to access deeper tissues quicker than conventional massages.
